Human Marks

These photographs present two specific types of handmade human marks. In each case, one human being makes a mark to communicate to other unknown humans an invisible meaning, something unable to normally be seen. The mark-maker uses specialized knowledge and makes a mark that shares meaning with fellow humans. The marks are usually simple and often very colorful. When looked at closely, they reveal beautiful abstract forms, both in themselves and in the surface upon which the marks are made.

Designations

Utility designation marks, often painted on streets or sidewalks, use a standardized color code to identify underground utilities. These utilities – energy, information, water, sewer – are the foundation of modern civilization. This system helps those working above ground avoid damage to these essential flows.

Blazes

Trail blazes are painted marks placed on trees, rocks or other natural features to mark the path of a trail. These marks help people stay on the trail, especially in places where the true way might be unclear or difficult to follow.
